Quick answer

Wordle in 1 is a weekly New York Times bonus puzzle. Each game has five rounds, and every round shows one clue word already coloured green, yellow and grey. Only one word fits each clue, so you win by naming all five. It launched on September 2, 2026, alongside five other bonus puzzle types.

What is Wordle in 1?

Wordle in 1 is a variation of Wordle where the clue comes before the guess. New York Times Games describes it as Wordle with one clue and one possible word. You do not gather information over several rows. The clue is already scored, and your job is to work out which five-letter word produced that pattern.

It sits in the NYT Games bonus puzzle drop, which is separate from the daily Wordle. For how the daily game works, read how to play Wordle.

How to play Wordle in 1

You play by reading the coloured clue in each round, working out the one word that matches it, and typing it. You must solve all five rounds to win.

  1. Read the clue word. Each round opens with one five-letter word whose tiles are already coloured.
  2. Lock the greens. A green letter is in the answer, in that exact position.
  3. Move the yellows. A yellow letter is in the answer, but not in the position shown.
  4. Drop the greys. A grey letter is not in the answer, unless another copy of that letter is green or yellow in the same clue.
  5. Type the one word that fits. Only one word satisfies every tile.
  6. Repeat for five rounds. The game is won when all five words are correct.

The colour meanings match the daily game. Our Wordle colours guide covers them in full.

How many guesses do you get per round?

The NYT announcement says there is one word to guess per round. It does not state a guess limit. Beebom's explainer says the variation “gives you just one attempt,” and contrasts that with the six attempts of regular Wordle. TheWordFinder's Wordle in 1 page describes unlimited guesses, but we could not open that page to confirm the wording. Until the game's own rules are clear, treat each round as a single attempt.

What is timer mode?

Timer mode is an optional setting. Beebom describes it as “an optional timer too if you want to add some extra pressure.” NYT presents it as a way to compare times with friends. You can leave it off.

How is Wordle in 1 different from regular Wordle?

Regular Wordle gives you six guesses and no clues at the start. Wordle in 1 gives you a finished clue and asks for one answer per round.

In the daily game, a loose second guess costs you little, because four rows remain. In Wordle in 1, there is no second clue coming. A misread yellow or a forgotten duplicate-letter rule is the difference between a solved round and a missed one.

How can one coloured clue leave only one answer?

It happens only when the greens, yellows and greys rule out every other word. Here is a worked example from our own check, not a real NYT round. Take the clue CRANE scored like this:

CRANE

C is green in position one. R and A are grey. N and E are yellow, so both are in the answer but not in positions four and five.

Against the 1,913 distinct words that have been Wordle answers (puzzles #0 to #1940, data as of 15 October 2026), exactly one word fits: COVEN.

The pool matters. Our 3,424-word solver list also contains CENTS and CONES, which fit the same clue. A clue is unique only within the word list you test it against, so a fair round depends on the answer list the game uses.

How often does a common opener pin down one answer?

Rarely. We scored six common openers against the 1,913 past answers and counted how many answers produce a colour pattern that no other answer shares.

Clue wordDifferent colour patternsAnswers pinned to one wordShare of 1,913 answersBiggest leftover group
TRACE146351.8%185 (all grey)
CRANE139311.6%196 (all grey)
SLATE142311.6%178 (all grey)
RAISE124261.4%144 (all grey)
AUDIO87251.3%354 (yellow A only)
ADIEU76140.7%221 (yellow A only)

TRACE leaves the fewest answers in its biggest group, but still isolates only 35 of 1,913 answers. An all-grey CRANE leaves 196 past answers standing. For the reasoning behind these openers, see best Wordle starting words.

When do new Wordle in 1 puzzles come out?

NYT releases a new bonus drop every Wednesday. Each drop has five or six puzzles. The first drop arrived on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, according to Beebom.

Wordle in 1 is not promised in every drop. NYT says the types of bonus puzzle can vary from week to week. GamesBeat, quoting the launch announcement, reports that the puzzles roll out to subscribers on Wednesdays “within the next few months.”

Is Wordle in 1 free, and where do you play it?

A starter set is free for every solver, with no subscription. The weekly Wednesday drops are for NYT Games and All Access subscribers.

The puzzles sit inside New York Times Games. NYT's release lists the Games app on iOS and Android, plus mobile web and desktop. The Games site links to a Bonus Puzzles hub.

Does Wordle in 1 affect your Wordle stats?

Beebom's explainer says bonus puzzles do not change your usual Wordle, Connections or other daily game statistics. Those numbers are tracked separately. For how the daily stats work, see Wordle stats explained.

Are sites called Wordle in One the same game?

No. Independent sites have copied the format under names such as Wordle in One. At least one states on its own page that it is not affiliated with The New York Times. These clones run their own word lists and rules. Our Wordle Unlimited guide explains how to tell them apart.

What other bonus puzzles launched with Wordle in 1?

NYT launched six bonus puzzle types. Each is a twist on a game NYT already publishes.

How do you solve a Wordle in 1 round?

Treat the clue as a checklist, and do not type until every tile is accounted for.

  • Write the skeleton first. Put the greens in their slots and leave blanks for the rest. For CRANE above, that is C _ _ _ _.
  • Place each yellow by elimination. A yellow letter cannot sit in the slot shown on its tile.
  • Use greys as hard bans. Remove every candidate that contains a grey letter before you weigh anything else.
  • Watch repeated letters. If one copy of a letter is coloured and another is grey, the answer contains exactly that many copies. The double letters guide covers the rule.
  • Prefer the common word. If two candidates still fit, pick the everyday one.

To check your reasoning, enter the clue word and its colours into the Wordle solver. It lists the words that still fit the tiles you set.
